With the growing importance of food safety, government authorities are intensifying their oversight of infant nutrition products. Starting July 1st, the "Prepackaged Special Dietary Food Label" regulation will come into effect, aiming to bring more transparency and control to the market.
Special dietary foods are specifically formulated by manufacturers to meet the unique nutritional needs of certain populations, such as infants or individuals with medical conditions. These products often contain specific nutrients or ingredients tailored for particular health requirements. However, in the past, some companies have used misleading marketing tactics, which confused consumers. The new regulation is designed to prevent such practices and ensure accurate labeling.
One key change is that claims like "multiple DHA" or "DHA affinity ratio" will no longer be allowed on packaging. Additionally, labels must not make functional claims about essential ingredients in infant formula for babies aged 0 to 6 months. This means slogans like "high in DHA" or "whey protein rich" will soon disappear from product packaging.
During a recent visit to supermarkets and baby stores in Changsha, reporters found that some infant formula products still had prominent labels such as "67% DHA" or "Affinity Human Body Oil OPO." Some brands were also running promotions, lowering prices on older stock to clear inventory before the new rules take full effect.
According to a store employee at Century Jinyuan, the timing of the promotion coincides with the transition period, allowing old packaging to be sold off before the deadline.
Experts emphasize that China’s national food safety standards clearly define the essential nutrients required for infants under six months. Since these babies need balanced nutrition, no specific ingredient should be highlighted on the label.
The new regulations also require special dietary labels to include clear instructions on how to consume the product, including daily or per-meal dosages. This helps guide consumers in using the products correctly.
In markets targeting people with diabetes, many products use xylitol instead of sugar, but few clearly state that they are suitable for diabetic consumers. In one pharmacy, however, a nutrient solution for post-surgery patients included detailed usage and storage instructions.
It's important to note that special medical formulas, including infant formulas, should be used under the guidance of a doctor or dietitian. The consumption method should be marked as "consult a doctor or dietitian for daily use."
Products manufactured before July 1 can still be sold until their expiration date, but any items produced after that must comply with the new labeling rules. Consumers are advised to check the production date when purchasing to ensure compliance with the updated standards.
