The term "a hundred days of injury and bones" refers to the long recovery period often required after a fracture. Traditionally, patients are immobilized with a rigid plaster cast wrapped in thick bandages, which can be uncomfortable and inconvenient. However, the introduction of 3D printing technology is revolutionizing this traditional approach. One major issue with conventional casts is that they are hard to clean and don’t allow the skin to breathe. This makes them uncomfortable, especially during hot summers or cold winters. Scott Summit, who suffered an arm injury and spent six months recovering, was also the design director at a 3D printing company called Bespoke, known for its custom stents and prosthetics. Seizing the opportunity, he designed a 3D-printed support system to replace the traditional cast. The key advantage of 3D printing is its flexibility and customization. As Summit noted, “In 1997, 3D printing was just beginning to show promise across various fields—space, art, fashion, dentistry, and more. Today, we see it as a powerful tool in healthcare, where every individual’s needs are unique. That’s why one-size-fits-all solutions don’t work.” Summit first scanned his arm in 3D and then printed a lightweight support structure. This device used three key points to stabilize the arm, allowing the ligaments to heal gradually. Unlike a full cast, the bracket didn’t fully enclose the arm, ensuring breathability and ease of movement. At just 5 mm thick, it looked more like a piece of modern art than a medical device. “Not only does this product make life easier for doctors by eliminating the need for plaster, but it also offers patients a lighter, more comfortable experience,” Summit explained. “While I wouldn’t claim it’s the best solution ever, it’s definitely a significant improvement over traditional methods.” Doctors have also praised the innovation. With this support, Summit could shower normally and even apply ointment directly to the wound—a feature not possible with traditional casts. He could continue his daily activities without feeling restricted. Despite the success, Summit did not disclose the cost of the bracket when interviewed by Fast Company. “Seven years ago, the idea of using 3D printing for such a purpose seemed absurd. But now, it’s not only feasible—it works better than conventional treatments.” This breakthrough shows how 3D printing is transforming healthcare, making medical solutions more personalized, practical, and user-friendly.
