The term "a hundred days of injury and bones" refers to the long recovery period after a fracture, during which patients typically have to wear a rigid plaster cast wrapped in thick bandages. This traditional method, while effective, is often uncomfortable and inconvenient. To improve patient experience, 3D printing technology has introduced a new solution: the 3D printed stand. Plaster casts are known for two major issues: they are difficult to clean and do not allow the skin to breathe. This makes daily life challenging, especially in extreme weather conditions—hard to manage in winter and uncomfortable in summer. Scott Summit, who suffered an arm injury, spent six months recovering. As the design director at a 3D printing company called Bespoke, he had the unique opportunity to develop a 3D-printed support system tailored to his needs. This innovation was not just about comfort—it was about redefining what medical devices could look and feel like. “The beauty of 3D printing lies in its endless possibilities,” Summit explained. “From space to art, fashion, and dentistry, it can be applied everywhere. In healthcare, where every individual is unique, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution.” Summit started by scanning his arm in 3D, then printed a lightweight support that fixed the injured area through three key points. This allowed the ligaments to heal gradually while keeping the arm mostly exposed. Unlike traditional casts, this stand didn’t fully encase the arm, making it breathable, portable, and surprisingly unobtrusive. The bracket was only 5 mm thick, so it looked more like a piece of modern art than a medical device. “This product not only eases the burden on doctors but also gives patients a sense of lightness and freedom,” Summit said. “While I can’t claim it’s the best solution, it definitely offers a better alternative to conventional treatments.” Doctors have also praised the innovation. With the 3D-printed stand, Summit could shower normally and even apply ointments directly to the wound—something he hadn’t considered possible with a traditional cast. He could go about his day without any noticeable restrictions. Despite the success, Summit didn’t reveal the exact cost of the bracket when interviewed by Fast Company. “Seven years ago, thinking about using 3D printing for this kind of problem seemed absurd,” he admitted. “But now, we’ve proven that it’s not just a dream—it works better than traditional methods.”
