After over a decade in the industry, we’ve finally decided to release a Flash study. This is an ongoing project, so stay tuned to this page for updates. If you have anything to contribute or any questions, feel free to leave a comment or send us an email. Back when we initiated the custom USB drive market eight years ago, things were quite different. Prices have dropped significantly, demand has grown, and technology has improved. Today, we stock more drives than we initially sold when we began. Over the years, we’ve encountered various types of drives and always aimed to use the most reliable components. Here’s what we’ve learned: - Most NAND Flash is manufactured by Samsung, Toshiba, Micron, Hynix, and Intel. - The smallest capacity currently produced by these manufacturers is 8GB. Any smaller capacities you see on the market are typically downgraded Flash. - Downgraded Flash comes from higher-capacity chips with defective sectors. These sectors are isolated, and the chip is repurposed for the next smallest capacity. - The USB controller determines the functionality of the drive. The combination of the controller and Flash chip, along with other components, defines the quality of the USB drive. - In the OEM market, popular controllers include Alcor Micro, SMI (Silicon Motion), and Chipsbank. For this study, we’ve tested several branded USB drives from our partners, as well as OEM drives we either assembled ourselves or sourced from China. We use these components based on customer budgets and technical requirements. We used CrystalDiskMark to measure sequential read/write speeds with 50MB and 1GB (1000MB) test sizes. Additionally, we used Check Flash to test for errors. **SanDisk** - SanDisk Flash and Controller - 16GB USB 2.0 tested > 14.9GB of usable memory - Read Speed: 21.66MB/s, Write Speed: 3.966MB/s ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/16ce9628463712b1eeb0ac1b60bb13b9.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/2c32df2c79c3d93d768ab2b5a486e999.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/5fe8cf4b2ec9f27bf4abd4f8b060a533.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/e14d263615546e8e998fa84b14193ce1.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/81514ad987f78a2cbfab4b368a141370.jpg) **Kingston** - Toshiba Flash and TC58NC226166F Controller - 8GB USB 2.0 tested > 7.24GB of usable memory - Read Speed: 19.13MB/s, Write Speed: 9.473MB/s - Controller VID 0930 and PID 6545 ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/a05fff302578e4e5289b5bce754377c6.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/fa71b7724b4c2626725d15b2fc6b0dca.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/df0fa63ec89343aad46e208efb03afc0.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/a62942e9b0de323feaafe2a38509ca8c.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/24b77b5212dbce9231a024dc079af92a.jpg) **PNY** - Unidentified Flash, ITE IT1167BE Controller - 4GB USB 2.0 tested > 3.75GB of usable memory - Read Speed: 21.90MB/s, Write Speed: 7.046MB/s - Controller VID 048D and PID 1168 ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/2ff9b250ba3e9570a2821929f29d27a2.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/648809266059949748df4dc9fe838722.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/8e1fd6bdc2325b7f28d5016603978c90.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/35af3177984617132ef2ef54dcfe8bb6.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/7ada56f100c7560ae8c4f020ab559d28.jpg) **SuperTalent USB 3.0** - Micron Flash, Innostor IS902 Controller - 8GB USB 3.0 tested > 37.17GB of usable memory - Read Speed on USB 2.0 Port: 36.86MB/s, Write Speed on USB 2.0 Port: 13.24MB/s - Controller VID 1B8F and PID 0902 ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/30ad381f291c05deab45c9e0fa222399.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/9f44b564d19c9132752d47c31dbe6836.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/96e63bcc7a88908eed8ee477d4dfebbb.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/4cea2a1de889f2e8c7c8561f60c3f2e6.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/4c0d48d7686aae9c3febfdd79cffd0ce.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/f27146763318fbe71b9b3ae3fd170e72.jpg) **OEM Alcor AU6989** - Unidentified Flash, Alcor AU6989 Controller - 8GB USB 2.0 tested > 7.48GB of usable memory - Read Speed: 15.35MB/s, Write Speed: 3.568MB/s - Controller VID 058F and PID 6387 ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/4dd3e2f8dcc957b3cb0485c2a745c373.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/e9e3b0688c6d7bf20194902ae0fc1808.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/182899ca970c1f609d2159c95b56aa8f.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/29014df83f845ee93eec11bfeaae5d4e.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/ca664ce713577b476fa3957c9cfb7a22.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/e51793838a6506cbf6cd18f7c665b7ed.jpg) **OEM Chipsbank CBM2096** - Unidentified Flash, Chipsbank CBM2096 Controller - 2GB USB 2.0 tested > 1.87GB of usable memory - Read Speed: 13.96MB/s, Write Speed: 5.098MB/s - Controller VID 1E3D and PID 2096 ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/9b008ce5ed6765b3c280f33a0a8ccf87.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/35d754cde5072c9f740cff3b396f286d.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/87c3dcc54c1eaef52995d21382153231.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/e349bd99c3f5778adbc8f0560b396fa3.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/f000fd89cc645ced12779defb412133b.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/0024f5264ea0baa965404ce7aaad2a3c.jpg) **OEM Unidentified “Blob”** - Unidentified Flash, Unidentified Controller - 2GB USB 2.0 tested > 1.86GB of usable memory - Read Speed: 17.20MB/s, Write Speed: 6.219MB/s - Controller VID 058F and PID 6387 (based on research, this USB drive uses a Chipsbank CBM2096 controller) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/8a414e506e75ee13feb59a59e133ba00.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/df60b21a8f5dd4c3c281df81f74a16b2.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/587d609f98936a09d5fde966b820fd69.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/ecdeed905ba4db4f0f4774aa81e35bab.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/91d41b7ca76cb802c499abbc9281946a.jpg) ![](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/e8c6a8176f59490debb5349cd500a381.jpg) This is just the beginning of our study, so keep checking back for more updates.
