**Honeywell UOP to Support Nigeria in Building Africa’s Largest Refinery**
In a major development for the African energy sector, Honeywell UOP has announced that Nigeria will implement its advanced process technology, catalysts, and equipment to construct Africa's largest refinery. This strategic move is expected to significantly reduce the country's reliance on imported fuel and petrochemical products.
The Dangote Oil Refining project will leverage UOP's cutting-edge technologies to establish a world-class integrated oil and chemical production complex within the Lekki Free Trade Zone near Lagos. This facility aims to enhance Nigeria's refining capacity and promote self-sufficiency in energy products.
According to data from the *Oil & Gas Journal*, Nigeria holds the second-largest proven oil reserves in Africa, with approximately 37.2 billion barrels. Despite this, the country has long struggled with limited refining capabilities, forcing it to rely heavily on foreign imports for its fuel and chemical needs.
For over a century, UOP has been at the forefront of designing modern refineries and chemical plants using innovative technologies. Pete Piotrowski, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Honeywell UOP’s Process Technology and Equipment Business, emphasized the company’s confidence in supporting Nigeria’s energy transformation through this landmark project.
“This project will not only boost Nigeria’s refining capacity but also contribute to economic growth and development by reducing import dependency,†he said.
The Dangote Group, one of the largest industrial conglomerates in West Africa, is spearheading the initiative. With operations spanning multiple sectors such as cement, real estate, oil, gas, telecommunications, fertilizers, and steel, the group plays a vital role in meeting the growing demand for high-value goods and services across the continent.
Beyond crude oil processing, the new facility will produce high-quality gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and emissions compliant with Euro 5 standards. Additionally, it will manufacture large quantities of polypropylene—a key raw material for plastics and packaging products.
UOP’s technologies involved in the project include:
- **UOP RFCC (Residue Fluidized Bed Catalytic Cracking)**: Converts crude oil into transportation fuels and propylene.
- **UOP CC RPlatformingâ„¢**: Produces high-octane gasoline blending components.
- **UOP Unicaringingâ„¢**: Generates clean diesel fuel.
- **UOP Penexâ„¢**: Enhances gasoline quality with high octane content.
- **Crude Distillation Unit (CDU)**: Designed by UOP partner Process Consulting Service.
This partnership marks a significant step forward for Nigeria’s energy infrastructure and positions the country to become a regional energy hub.
