Liu Xiang: Preparing for a Retirement Proposal in the Sports Industry
Date: March 16, 2015, 18:09
At each of the two sessions of the National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), member of the CPPCC National Committee and renowned athlete Liu Xiang remains a hot topic. During this year’s sessions, Liu submitted a proposal focused on the industrialization of sports. He told reporters that this proposal was the result of months of research and discussions with Yao Ming and other professionals. When asked about his future plans, Liu said he will always be a sports person and will continue to work in the sports industry after retirement, dedicating himself to promoting sports industrialization.
Spent Months Preparing the Proposal
In a conference room at the Beijing Railway Building, Liu Xiang sat with Yao Ming, who also participated in the discussion of the sports group of the CPPCC. They exchanged ideas during the meeting, occasionally joking around with each other.
During the group discussion, Liu Xiang spoke with reporters and revealed the theme of his proposal this year: improving service levels and promoting the industrialization of sports. When asked how long he had been preparing, he said, “I’ve spent several months on it because I needed to conduct thorough research.â€
The reporter learned that last year, Liu had proposed “opening up sports to return to life,†and this year’s proposal on sports industrialization is an extension of that idea.
Frequent Exchanges with Yao Ming
With the growing trend of sports industrialization, Liu Xiang shared that he has been in contact with institutions specializing in event organization. Taking marathons as an example, there are now many events of various sizes, and former athletes are often invited to compete. He noted that some marathons sell out within minutes of registration opening. Liu believes that improving service quality is the top priority in advancing sports industrialization.
He also mentioned that during the preparation of his proposal, he had multiple discussions with Yao Ming and other experts. “I think the proposal shouldn’t just be my own opinion. The views of others are the most important,†he said.
Still Connected to Sports After Retirement
Liu Xiang explained that many people confuse the sporting goods industry with the sports industry itself. In fact, the first step is to promote sports industrialization, which helps shift this perception. He emphasized that raising the level of service must be a key focus. Service, he added, is closely linked to one essential factor—professionalism.
“Professional people should do professional things,†Liu said. He believes that the development of the sports industry depends heavily on the growth and training of professionals. Providing good training is also a form of service.
Although fewer athletes are actively competing these days, Liu still sees himself as a sports person. Whether as an athlete or as someone involved in sports-related work, he remains deeply connected to the field. He also discussed talent development in sports industrialization, saying, “After retiring, athletes can continue contributing to the industry through training and fitness programs.â€
Liu Xiang’s passion for sports remains strong, and his vision for the future of the industry reflects both experience and a deep understanding of what it takes to build a sustainable and professional sports ecosystem.
