Liu Xiang: Preparing a Proposal for Sports Industrialization Before Retirement
Date: March 16, 2015, 18:09
At the annual two sessions of the National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Liu Xiang, a renowned athlete and CPPCC member, has always drawn widespread attention. This year, he submitted a proposal focusing on the industrialization of sports. In an interview with reporters, Liu revealed that this proposal was the result of months of research and discussions with Yao Ming and industry professionals. He emphasized that, despite his upcoming retirement, he will remain deeply involved in the sports sector, dedicating himself to promoting sports industrialization.
Liu Xiang spent several months preparing the proposal. During a group discussion session at the Beijing Railway Building, he sat with Yao Ming and other members of the sports group. As they discussed various topics, Liu and Yao occasionally played a quick game of table tennis, showing their relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
In an interview during the meeting, Liu explained that the main focus of his proposal was to enhance service quality and accelerate the industrialization of sports. When asked how long he had been working on it, he said, "I've been preparing for several months because I needed to conduct thorough research."
The reporter noted that last year, Liu had proposed the idea of "opening up sports to return to life," and this year’s proposal is a natural continuation of that vision.
Liu also mentioned that he had exchanged ideas with Yao Ming multiple times during the preparation process, as well as with various industry professionals. He stressed that the proposal should not be based solely on his own views but should reflect collective opinions and insights from others.
Looking ahead, Liu believes that the development of the sports industry must start with improving service levels. He pointed out that many people mistakenly equate the sporting goods industry with the broader sports industry. In reality, the first step is to promote sports industrialization, which requires shifting the focus toward service and professional expertise.
Liu also highlighted the importance of training and developing professionals in the sports industry. He believes that after retiring, athletes can continue contributing by engaging in training and education. Despite the decreasing number of active participants, Liu still identifies as a true sports person, whether as an athlete or as someone involved in sports-related work.
He concluded by saying that the future of sports lies in cultivating talent and ensuring that professionals are given the right opportunities to grow. For Liu, sports are more than just competition — they are a lifelong passion and a career path that continues even after retirement.
