**Chinese Packaging Network News** – Peel strength is a critical physical property that reflects the adhesion quality of composite films, making it an essential performance indicator for these materials. This article takes the Labthink Languang XLW (EC) intelligent electronic tensile testing machine as an example to test the peel strength of pharmaceutical packaging aluminum composite films. It introduces the methods and principles for monitoring the composite fastness of soft plastic packaging, along with details about equipment parameters, helping companies monitor heat seal strength and select appropriate testing equipment.
Composite membrane materials are produced by combining two or more single-layer films through processes such as dry lamination, extrusion lamination, and co-extrusion. The properties of each individual layer complement one another, resulting in enhanced barrier properties, mechanical strength, and overall performance. The composite fastness between layers significantly influences the final performance of the composite film. If the adhesion is poor, delamination can occur, which not only affects the appearance of the packaging but also weakens the synergistic effect between the layers. This leads to a reduction in barrier properties and mechanical strength. Additionally, low peel strength can cause delamination during tearing, affecting the usability of the package and potentially impacting drug dispensing. Therefore, monitoring the composite fastness of such materials is crucial for maintaining product integrity and performance.
Currently, composite films used in pharmaceutical packaging include plastic-composite films, aluminum-composite films, and aluminum-plastic-composite films. The peel strength of these materials is primarily referenced in the standard YBB00132002 — "General Rules for Compound Film Bags for Pharmaceutical Packaging."
In this study, a specific brand of pharmaceutical packaging aluminum composite film was tested. The sample was examined using the XLW (EC) intelligent electronic tensile testing machine, developed by Jinan Languang Electromechanical Technology Co., Ltd.
The test principle involves clamping the specimen in upper and lower fixtures. The upper fixture moves at a set speed while the lower remains fixed. As the upper clamp moves, the specimen is stretched, peeled, or torn, and the force and displacement changes are measured by sensors on the movable chuck. Based on these readings, the tensile breaking force, deformation rate, and peel strength are calculated.
This equipment is widely used for testing various properties of flexible packaging materials, including tensile strength, peel strength, tear resistance, heat sealing, and more. It meets numerous national and international standards, ensuring reliable and accurate results.
Key features of the XLW (EC) testing machine include a range of 50 N and 500 N, high accuracy (better than 0.5%), bidirectional testing modes, and multiple preset speeds. It supports eight independent test programs, including stretching, peeling, tearing, and heat sealing. The pneumatic clamping system prevents slippage, and built-in safety features like overload protection ensure safe operation.
The testing procedure involved cutting five specimens from both horizontal and vertical directions, manually peeling a portion of each, and clamping them in the device. Parameters such as test speed and sample width were set before starting the test. The machine automatically recorded the force data and calculated the peel strength.
The results showed lateral peel strengths of 1.06 N/15mm, 1.13 N/15mm, 1.09 N/15mm, 1.11 N/15mm, and 1.04 N/15mm, while the longitudinal peel strengths were 1.21 N/15mm, 1.19 N/15mm, 1.25 N/15mm, 1.17 N/15mm, and 1.23 N/15mm.
In conclusion, the XLW (EC) intelligent electronic tensile testing machine offers a user-friendly, accurate, and efficient way to measure peel strength. It is a versatile tool suitable for a wide range of applications, including testing the tensile strength of packaging bags, infusion caps, bottle stoppers, and more.
